Lesley Rankine was the female voice behind British Punk act Silverfish before she departed to go her own way. Before she was in Silverfish she was in a English band called Grizzelders, a group that played sixties punk music. After she left Silverfish she was in a state of trying to figure out what she wanted to do musically, she was tired of the same old type of music and she was looking for a new way to approach the music, a way that was different from what was going on in the scene at that time. One of her friends had a sampler that she enjoyed playing with and this got her thinking. She finally meet up with Mark Walk from Pigface and in the next 7 months they put together Ruby, Lesley's first solo album. She Finally had something that she pleased with. Not to say that she didn't like what she was doing in the other bands but Ruby gave her what she needed. The freedom to explore and try something new. And it was a success. She had a chance to be the lead singer in Garbage but she turned it down because she still knew that it wouldn't give her what she wanted. She knew only one way to do it and she did it with Ruby. I find the songs to be mysterious and errie at the same time. As if she is hypnotically putting views inside your head as you listen to the music. From the slow "Heidi" song which she says represents a perfect example of what she wanted to do with Ruby, to "Hoops" and then onward to "Carondelet". The whole CD is a roller coaster through a mind that is aware of it's place and time in a world mixed full of confusion.
